2022 Chevrolet Suburban vs 2022 Ford Expedition

If you’re in the market for a full-size SUV, you probably already have your choice narrowed to the most popular and critically acclaimed options: the Chevy Suburban and Ford Expedition.

But how do you choose between the two? Our guide will walk you through a multi-factor comparison in this tight race between two heavy favorites.

Engine Performance Comparison

When it comes to full-sized sports utility vehicles, the engine needs to have enough power to get these beasts moving. The Chevy Suburban comes equipped with two V8 options that are more than capable of towing an entire family. The Ford Expedition, however, gets going with a turbocharged V6 engine, which does well, but might struggle in head-to-head comparisons.

Fuel Economy Comparison

When your goal is making as few pit stops at gas stations as possible, it’s hard to go wrong with the Chevy Suburban. The Suburban’s fuel economy matches that of its Ford counterpart but comes with a tank that’s about 33 percent larger (31 gallons for the Suburban and 23.3 for the Expedition.)

Exterior Design Comparison

The Expedition and Suburban are similarly sized vehicles, although the Expedition literally inches out the Suburban in both width and height:

  • Suburban height: 74.4 inches
  • Suburban width (without side-view mirrors): 80.5 inches
  • Expedition height: 83.6 inches
  • Expedition width (without side-view mirrors): 83.6 inches

Further, with the recent redesign of both SUVs, they have similar spots on the traditional-modern design spectrum. The Expedition’s striking headlights and grille probably put it slightly closer to most modern designs, while the Suburban’s clean design leans more traditional.

Interior Comfort Comparison

When it comes to seating, the Suburban edges out the Expedition, with the flexibility to sit between seven and nine people comfortably. Its standard interior design includes front row bucket seats with bench seats in the second and third rows, allowing for seven passengers plus the drivers.

If you change the front row also to bench seating, you now have room for nine. If you keep the front row as-is and switch out the second row for bucket seats, you can seat seven.

The Expedition, however, seats seven or eight, depending on your preferred set-up. Their standard design matches that of the Suburban, but you lack the option of swapping out the front row for bench seats.

Both SUVs also feature 8-inch touch screens to interact with each brand’s infotainment system and allow for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The Suburban’s system is slightly more intuitive, with large virtual buttons populating the home screen, making it easier to control in a glance.

Safety Features Comparison

There’s nothing more important than keeping you and your family safe. Both the Suburban and Expedition offer world-class safety features and have received five-star safety ratings in specific tests from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Suburban packs a lot of standard features into the Suburban:

  • Rearview camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Teen Driver safety system as well as other superior safety features
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Forward collision warning
  • Front parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

The Ford Expedition, on the other hand, comes with Ford’s new Co-Pilot360 bundle of features. Some features that come standard with the Suburban, like rain-sensing windshield wipers, are only optional with the Expedition.
